Tennessee Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit Course

This course fulfills Tennessee’s education requirement for the Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit. This class is a comprehensive training course designed to educate individuals on the laws and regulations surrounding the carrying of concealed firearms. We’ll cover essential topics such as the use of force, firearms safety, and the proper handling and storage of firearms, as well as the specific laws and requirements for obtaining a permit in Tennessee.

STATE REQUIREMENTS TO OBTAIN PERMIT

EDUCATION

• For the Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit you must successfully complete an 8-hour Tennessee handgun safety course (this class satisfies that requirement.)
• Pass with a minimum 70% score on a written exam, which includes 50 questions.

LIVE FIRE REQUIREMENT

• 50-round live-fire qualification with a minimum score of 70%. This qualification includes shooting at distances of three, five, and seven yards. 

Failure to pass either the written or shooting portion necessitates retaking the entire course.

DOCUMENTATION + APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

• Complete 8-hour educational training course
• Fill out online application | Applicants with a REAL ID may complete the application entirely online. Those without a REAL ID must visit the Driver Service Center after submitting the online application and bring the following documents: proof of US citizenship, proof of SSN, proof of firearm training, two proofs of Tennessee residency with your name and resident address, proof of any name changes, and a valid government issued ID.
• You will be notified by mail within 90 days if your application has been approved.

*Accepted methods of payment for an original handgun carry permit are cash, money order, MasterCard, Visa and Discover credit cards. Checks are only accepted for renewal and duplicate handgun carry permit applications, not on original applications.*

• Enhanced HCP | $100 for the initial eight-year permit and $50 for renewal ($65 for active duty or honorably discharged members of the military)
• Lifetime Enhanced HCP | $300 or $200 if upgrading from an eight-year permit ($265 for active duty or honorably discharged members of the military, free for retired law enforcement officers)
• Renewal or Upgrade Application (8-Year Enhanced) | $50.00
• Duplicate/Replacement | $5.00
