Make Protection Your Priority

This course is a complete guide to understanding the basics of firearms ownership, safety, and nomenclature, and how it applies to home- or self-defense.

After this class, students will feel confident to act as their family’s first line of defense in the event of a home invasion or other critical incident.

In this course we will cover topics such as:

  • Louisiana concealed carry laws
  • Handgun nomenclature
  • Training, application and approval process
  • Denials and how to handle them
  • Renewals and replacements
  • Open carry vs. concealed carry
  • Requirements for displaying your permit
  • Safe handling of your firearm
  • Ammunition knowledge and fundamentals of pistol shooting
  • Handgun shooting positions
  • Child weapon access prevention
  • Proper handgun cleaning
  • Where carry is banned or otherwise restricted
  • Related state statutes and federal law

Louisiana is a shall issue state.

As long as the applicant meets the basic requirements set out by Louisiana state law, they can obtain a Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP). Open carry is also legal in Louisiana for any person who is at least 18 years old and who can legally possess a firearm. A license is not required, but you cannot carry in vehicles.

Although Louisiana is a permitless carry state for those at least 21 years old and those individuals can legally carry a concealed weapon without a permit, there are many reasons to still pursue obtaining your concealed handgun permit, such as:

  • Reciprocity: Without the permit, you cannot carry in any of the states that have reciprocity with the Louisiana CHP.
  • Education: Arguably, the greatest and most important reason to obtain a CHP is the training you will receive. While we believe that citizens should be allowed to exercise a constitutional right without a permit, we also encourage training and education to create responsibly armed Americans.

The state of Louisiana requires students to complete a live fire exercise to obtain your permit. Your instructor will provide detailed information about the live fire portion of this course upon registration.

Be sure to bring any snacks or drinks for the class as well as a pen and paper to take notes.
