Iowa Permit to Carry Weapons Course

This course is a complete guide to understanding the basics of firearms ownership, safety, and nomenclature, and how it applies to home- or self-defense.

After this class, students will feel confident to act as their family’s first line of defense in the event of a home invasion or other critical incident.

In this course we will cover topics such as: 

• Test your knowledge on Iowa’s concealed carry laws
• What the carry laws provide
• Training required
• Application process
• Denials and how to handle them
• Renewals and replacements
• Open carry vs. concealed carry
• Requirements for displaying your permit
• Where carrying is banned or otherwise restricted
• Related state statutes and federal laws

There is no longer a requirement for a permit to acquire or a permit to carry in order to purchase a handgun or carry a firearm in public places in Iowa (subject to certain limitations), however there are still many reasons why Iowans should still consider obtaining an Iowa permit to carry:

• Allows Iowans to carry in states with permit reciprocity while traveling.
• May prevent potential delays resulting from a delayed National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) check when purchasing from an FFL.
• May clarify any questions an individual has regarding their eligibility to carry or possess firearms.
• May prevent legal issues associated with a person coming within 1,000 feet of the grounds of a public, parochial, or private school without a state issued permit in violation of the Gun Free School Zones Act, 18 USC § 921(a)(25) and 18 USC § 922(q)(2).
